Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

Starting from a research project in the Romanian language Wikipedia community, this short talk invites you to discover elements and processes that take place for editors when facing various NPOV contexts and will include examples of exercises and learning contexts.

Description[edit source]

Starting from a research project funded by the Wikimedia Foundation - Grounding NPOV pillar in post-censored information ecology - the presenters inquired into ways in which NPOV is addressed in the Romanian language Wikipedia community. This short talk invites you to discover the elements and processes that take place for editors when they face various NPOV contexts. The research used qualitative methods (text analysis and interviews) and focused on librarians learning to edit Wikipedia and experienced Wikipedia editors. The relation to the Wikipedia NPOV pillar develops in time for editors and the experiences outside and within the community of editors are continuously influencing their engagement. This presentation aims to offer insights into the educational and cultural background of Wikipedia beginners and experienced editors, focusing on the relation between said background and NPOV understanding. Moreover, a layer of language barriers and (de)limitations (between English NPOV and Romania PDVN) will be described when looking at how this understanding takes place.
The session is a description of the entanglement that happens between the personal, professional, educational, cultural, and communal processes that are inside each one of us, that develop over time, and influence the way we understand and adhere to shared community principles. The talk will include examples from the learning aids developed for better understanding of the NPOV in the Romanian language community.

The more we understand it, the better we will be at addressing it in our own communities.
