In 2023, several cultural institutions obtained the Culture libre label for the first time, highlighting their commitment to the free sharing of content and cultural data on Wikimedia projects and more broadly by adopting open licenses.

For several years, we have been training professionals from the world of culture in the wikimedia project, organizing editathons to raise awareness and improve the free dissemination of cultural content on Wikimedia projects. All Wikimedian organizations throughout the world have linked increasingly close relations with cultural institutions. In France, however, we encountered two major problems: - How to be sure that the willingness of a cultural institution to interact with Wikimedia projects does not rest solely on 1 or 2 motivated people but that it is indeed a global policy of the institution with a strong inscription of the contribution in the internal life of the organization - How to unite/bring together all the cultural institutions involved to constitute a movement strong and audible enough to attract new institutions but also to influence the government to remove political and regulatory barriers.
The label project aims to meet these two challenges. Indeed, to obtain the label, an institution must agree to open these doors to the members of the jury who will be able to examine professional practices, discuss with the staff and thus evaluate in depth the institution’s acculturation to Wikimedia projects and values of the wiki movement. Finally, the labeled institutions form a powerful national network that demonstrates the stakes and the strength of the movement that we hope to further grow in the years to come.
