Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

“How can a Movement as large and complex as ours develop the capacity to identify and try the ideas we think have the potential to produce the kind of generative change we need?”

In this interactive session, we’ll look back at a range of MediaWiki software features that have been introduced over the past 20 years to identify the properties that are common among those that end up generating new ways for new people to learn from, and contribute to, our projects.

Description[edit source]

For Wikipedia [and Wikimedia projects more broadly] to sustain and remain relevant, the Movement needs to evolve how it sees itself so that it can relate its projects to people who do not yet know they exist.

The question that remains is, “How? How can a Movement as large and complex as ours develop the capacity to identify and try the ideas we think have the potential to produce the kind of generative change we need?”

In this interactive session, we’ll look back at a range of MediaWiki software features that have been introduced over the past 20 years to identify the properties that are common among those that end up generating new ways for new people to learn from, and contribute to, our projects.

Ideally, participants will walk away with:

  1. The beginning of a shared framework/language for identifying generative ideas latent within our existing ecosystem and
  2. Connections to people across the Movement who are motivated and equipped to start experimenting with these small, high potential ideas
