Black Lunch Table- eliza myrie and Kearra Gopee

Black Lunch Table (BLT) is a nonprofit organization and eighteen-year ongoing artist collaboration. BLT’s primary aim has been the production of discursive sites, wherein cultural producers engage in dialogue on a variety of critical issues. Black Lunch Table Wikimedians mobilize the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. In the field of mainstream contemporary art, Black artists are still marginalized within our field. File:Black Lunch Table logo.png

Abstract[edit source]

Black Lunch Table will present a survey of its programming and educational efforts undertaken between Wikimania 2019 and now.

Description[edit source]

This presentation by Black Lunch Table’s Wikimedia Project Assistant Kearra Gopee will detail BLT’s online and in-person programming and educational efforts in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In the midst of a global lockdown, BLT pivoted its efforts to serve the needs of Black artists who found themselves at a financial loss. Our online programming includes BLT: Live, an online platform for artists to stage performances or give free, public lectures about their work. Similarly, BLT: Topic Focus had experts working across various facets of Wiki give demonstrations to attendees on how to hone specific skills related to editing, for example, working with images or editing across several languages. Meanwhile, our return to in-person programming saw the expansion of our Regional Proxy program to include several cities on the African continent as well as the US. In addition, BLT’s flagship Photo Booth initiative, an effort to make notable artists that fall in the Wiki gaps more visible through partnerships with local institutions and professional photographers, became standardized. These pop-up portrait studios produce images of Black artists and makes those same images available for use on Wikimedia Commons with open licenses for free use, edit and distribution. Finally, in 2022, BLT appointed its inaugural Wikipedia fellow in collaboration with Pace Gallery in New York City. This six-month-long fellowship culminated with an exhibition titled [action=query]: Black Arts and Black Aesthetics at Pace’s New York gallery from February 1-25, 2023. The first appointed fellow, Kristen J. Owens, created a new bibliographic text based on her research into Black artists in Pace’s history. In conclusion, this presentation will provide the Wikimania community with insight into our programming and pedagogical concerns, as well as invite new editors into the BLT fold by illustrating our existing avenues for collaborative work.
