Abstract[edit source]

Poster Category: Equity and Community Health Session Time: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in Singapore

The VGLUG community promotes digital literacy and technical skills among rural youth and women by organizing workshops, events, and training sessions for the Wikimedia and FOSS projects. Through a strong network of volunteers, we encourage participation and hold weekly meetups to promote contributions. Despite limited digital infrastructure in rural areas, VGLUG has built trust by engaging with the community, providing support, and strengthening the bonds within the community.

Description[edit source]

  • As a VGLUG community, we actively contribute to the Wikimedia projects by organizing workshops, events, and training sessions to promote digital literacy and technical skills among rural youth and women.
  • By building a strong network of volunteers, we encourage active participation from community members in contributing to the FOSS projects.
  • To promote the contribution of rural youths to Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and strengthen the community through weekly meetups.
  • To identifying challenges and opportunities in promoting FOSS in rural areas, and finding ways to encourage the community to contribute for the projects.
  • Building a community from scratch was not an easy task, especially in rural areas where access to technology and digital infrastructure is limited. However, we overcame these challenges by engaging with the local community and building trust through our actions.
  • We provided training and support to those who were interested in learning and contributing to FOSS and Wikimedia projects, and gradually gained their support and involvement in the community. Through these efforts, we have strengthened the bonds within the Wikimedia community and fostered a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing.
