Andrew Lih
Andrew Lih (User:Fuzheado) is one of the world’s experts on Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement and is the author of the book The Wikipedia Revolution: How a bunch of nobodies created the world’s greatest encyclopedia (2009). He currently works on open access projects with Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons images, with the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution as Wikimedian at Large. In 2022, he was named a Wikimedia Laureate.
Galder Gonzalez
Wikimedian since 2006, member of the Basque Wikimedians User Group and currently working as a staff member in projects and education.
Shani Evenstein Sigalov
Shani Evenstein Sigalov is an educator, researcher and free knowledge advocate, focusing on bridging gender, language and social gaps in free knowledge projects. Her research explores the interaction between Education, Technology, Innovation and Openness, and she has recently completed her PhD on “Learning with the Semantic Web: The Case of Wikidata as a learning platform”. A long time Wikimedian, Shani also serves as the Vice Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
Tilman Bayer
Tilman is the editor-in-chief of the Wikimedia Research Newsletter, which has been covering research of relevance to the Wikimedia community monthly since 2011, and co-maintainer of the associated @WikiResearch Twitter feed. A Wikipedian since 2003, he also worked for the Wikimedia Foundation from 2011 to 2019, most recently as senior data analyst.

This panel will host 6 panelists from diverse backgrounds for a discussion on generative AI and its implication on Wikimedia projects. Panelists are: Jimmy Wales, Andrew Lih, Netha Hussain, Galder Gonzalez, Tilman Bayer and Leila Zia. Panel Facilitator: Shani Evenstein Sigalov.

We will specifically discuss existing uses and experimentation, existing challenges, and discussing some next steps and needs from our global community. The panel is community-focused, though it also hosts representatives from additional stakeholders in the movement. We recommend attending this session after attending the session “AI advancements and the Wikimedia projects” at 10:00, room 309, as the discussion there will inform ours.
