Head of the Software Communications Team at Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE). This team works closely with various individuals and organisations both within and without the Wiki communities. We aim to be the conduit between these groups and the Software Development Department at WMDE.

Hello there! My name is Alan (he/him). I am a Partner Manager at Wikimedia Deutschland. I am mainly responsible for reaching out to and onboard global institutions to the linked open data web via Wikidata and Wikibase projects. Apart from my full-time role at Wikimedia Germany, I am passionate about building up the Wiki community, Open Government projects and promoting the linked open data web across the world. When I was the Advisor to the Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic (until 2020) pro-bono basis, I pushed for the digitisation of cultural and heritage sites to start digital tourism and promoted open data in various government agencies.

Data Partnerships work is critical in onboarding global institutions to the Linked Open Data web to free up their data, so more knowledge can be made free and accessible to all of humanity. Without Data Partnerships, many institutions may have their data locked and stored in local databases. Join us and learn about the role of Data Partnerships at Wikimedia Deutschland, as it collaborates with local communities to set free and link knowledge around the world.

“Data Partnerships” refers to partnerships involving Wikidata and Wikibase. Wikidata is a free and openly accessible Wikimedia project that stores Linked Open Data about the world. Wikibase is the free, open-source software that powers Wikidata, and that can be used to store and organize information that can be collaboratively edited, translated into multiple languages, and read by humans and computers.

Wikimedia Deutschland has been actively pursuing Linked Open Data Partnerships with local communities and global institutions to make their knowledge accessible for everyone via Wikidata and Wikibase. At this session, you will learn more about Data Partnerships at Wikimedia Deutschland: Why we do what we do, What our focus areas are, Who are the partners we work with, How we collaborate with different local Wikimedia communities, Where we’re going next

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

Diversity: The Data Partnerships team at Wikimedia Deutschland reaches out to individuals, institutions and organisations from all over the world. Through Wikidata and Wikibase, we enable people to manage and share diverse, uncommon, marginalised, and underrepresented knowledge.

Collaboration: We connect to, and collaborate with, various local Wikimedia communities and User Groups to draft their Linked Open Data projects. The Wikibase and Wikidata software is collaborative at its core. Key to this core design is collaborative editing which is how it has primarily been used, the largest example being Wikidata.

Future: The role of Data Partnerships and the Linked Open Data web is to help secure humanity’s cultural heritage and knowledge for future generations. Data Partnerships is a key instrument in driving this collaboration, not just into the future, but into new geographical and knowledge spheres.
