I joined Wikimedia Deutschland in May 2022 and work in the Marginalized Knowledge Program. Before joining WMDE, I worked as a research assistant and coordinator in different projects looking at the perspectives, lived realities and political demands of migrant communitys in Germany. In the process of designing one of our bigger projects, we - the Marginalized Knowledge team - started to determine the actual needs and concerns of the communitys we wanted to work with to come up with approaches that make these concerns the center and starting point of the conversation. I want to share our experiences in setting up processes that take power into account and coming up with collaborative approaches. I also want to hear from the experiences within the movement in navigating power imbalances within the open access and see where to go from there together.

As a global movement that centers around knowledge, we know that what becomes public knowledge is strongly determined by questions of power. This shapes how we interact with each other as a society and as a movement as well as which perspectives are centered and which are marginalised - both on a global and local level. In this workshop I want us to discuss, exchange and form strategies and collaborative processes for navigating power inequalities in the open context, taking into account how local actions can feed into the global movement and vice versa.

The sixty minute workshop will be divided into three parts. I will start with an experience report of my team working on marginalized knowledge in the German context: What is our role as a team? How can we contribute to redistributing power and resources as part of collaborative processes? Which processes did we establish and why and what are the challenges that we did and do face? The experience report is an opening for the discussion in the second part of the workshop, in which I invite you to discuss the navigation of power imbalances in the open as well as the obstacles encountered in the process. In the third and final stage of the workshop based on the discussion, we will work on forming strategies and collaborations and define next steps on our contribution to a more equitable movement. If attendees are interested, I will organize a follow-up call, since this discussion can only be a starting point. For more openness you sometimes need closed spaces. Thus, to encourage an open discussion, the workshop is designed as a closed format.
