In this session, we’d like to discuss how we use Wikimedia Commons to promote Open Educational Resources among Indonesian educators. As a prominent platform that promotes open education and using open licenses, Wikimedia Commons is the best medium to raise awareness about copyright and Creative Commons licenses.

As representatives of Creative Commons Indonesia, Raymond Sutanto and I would like to present our most recent project about promoting Open Educational Resources (OER) in Indonesia.
After completing the OER booklet, we introduced them to Indonesian educators through workshops in several cities and online webinars. In the workshop, we introduced Wikimedia Commons as an OER repository that is free to use, with no need to subscribe, and no ads.
Besides that, we encourage the usage of Wikimedia Commons files as raw material to create learning materials for our educators. We ask our participants to download the OER Booklet from Wikimedia Commons. This action demonstrated the first of the 5R principles in OER by David Wiley, which is Retain.
After that, we provide instructions and tutorials on how to post OER works (exemplified by a photo) to Wikimedia Commons. We try to demonstrate how to mindfully license a work under Creative Commons by doing that. We’ll discuss some of the obstacles and challenges we encountered as facilitators in this activity.

To promote OER thru Wikimedia Commons, our target educators come from various cities in Indonesia. Apart from that, we also hold webinars to reach educators in the most remote areas.
