During Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Moldova, a novel idea came about: “What if we send people on their bicycles to discover and take photos of cultural heritage sites by themselves?”. Gamified activities, inspired by the “quest” format, can be tweaked in a million of ways (how flexible, how competitive, etc.), and can in the end provide Commons illustrations of underrepresented landmarks.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?
Established photo contests like Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) already have a gamified structure, by providing various incentives to motivate participants to contribute as much as possible.
To increase diversity and collaboration, further gamification is always a good idea – especially when it works :)
During the 2022 iteration of WLM in Moldova, a “sub-project” was tried out: bike quest. It ensures increase of diversity of both participants and content. More to the point: 1. Participants. More often than not, bicycle and alternative transportation users don’t really have any connection to the Wikimedia world. By reaching out to them with gamified projects like the bike quest we can bring diversity and open new fronts of collaboration. 2. Content. Some monuments / places are outright boring. Located off-the-beaten-path, few people visit them, except those that may have relatives there. Encouraging people to take these routes and take photos along the road ensures some level of visibility to regions that may otherwise keep waiting for their illustrations to show up on Commons.
