Over the years the content on Wikipedia in Spanish related to LGBT+ issues has increased explosively due to the work methodologies and engagement, which have emerged through the Wikiproject:LGBT, of members of the Wikimedia community as well as new users. But what have these methodologies been applied through this wikiproject, and what results have been obtained from this way of coordinating the work?

[edit | edit source]The session to be presented aims to illustrate and celebrate the evolution of content related to LGBT representation in Spanish Wikimedia projects, highlighting the impact and growth of the wikiproject:LGBT. This historical journey is intended not only to recognise the work of users who have contributed to the project, but also to inspire participation and understanding of the importance of inclusion and diversity in free knowledge platforms.
The presentation plans to: 1. describe the history and evolution of LGBT content in Wikipedia in Spanish: it will begin with a brief account of how LGBT representation has developed within the encyclopaedia, highlighting key moments in its history. 2. Analyse the birth and development of the wikiproject:LGBT: It will delve into how this project came about, the initial challenges and how it transformed from a small, neglected working group to a vibrant and effective team that has expanded its scope and quality of content. 3. Presenting milestones and achievements: Shocking figures will be presented, such as the increase of articles from 5 in 2016 to 750 in 2023, demonstrating the quantitative and qualitative growth of the project. 4. Show the extension of the work to other Wikimedia projects: We will talk about how the work has expanded to Wikimedia Commons, Wikinews, and Wikidata, among others, underlining the importance of diversifying the type of content managed. 5. Highlight the management of community activities: Highlight how activities such as editathons and monthly meetings have strengthened the community and promoted collaboration and knowledge sharing.
The presentation will be supported by detailed slides showing graphs, statistics, representative images and significant quotes from project contributors, all designed to provide an immersive and educational experience. In addition, audience participation will be encouraged through a question and answer segment, allowing for open dialogue and the opportunity to delve deeper into topics of particular interest. The attendees are expected to gain an in-depth understanding of the value of the wikiproject:LGBT, its impact on inclusive representation on free knowledge platforms, and how they can contribute to the continued growth of the project and the visibility of the LGBT community in the digital realm.
