The Local Digital Point is a variation of the Red Local Kimera. It is a Wifi local network that facilitates the utilization of Wikipedia for students (rural schools) without internet. This iteration originated from an innovation implemented at the RPS Campestre Monte Verde by John Barragán, with support from the creators RLK and Wikimedia Colombia. This innovation leverages the RLK as a repository of OER, without an instructor, relying on basic usage instructions for users within the Wi-Fi local network range. - How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?
Access to Wikipedia and, more broadly, Open Educational Resources in rural schools has been and remains a challenge. This access gap represents a problem situated within the needs of collectives and educational groups engaged in the Wikimedia ecosystem. Therefore, at Wikimania 2024, the component of innovation in education cannot be overlooked, nor can the ethical-political component of innovation, as exemplified by the access to utilize and produce Wikipedia offline through Red Local Kimera and Local Digital Point innovation.
