Session title: Tracking the progress of a cultural diversity project on Wikipedia, Commons, and Wikidata

Session type: Poster
Track: GLAM
Language: en

This session shows how Wikidata queries, custom code, and the help of a charity are helping a Wikipedian to work across languages to promote cultural diversity. I will share tools and tips that will be useful to anyone working to improve a topic across multiple Wikimedia platforms.

Description

[edit | edit source]

I work as Wikimedian In Residence at the Khalili Foundation, a charity promoting cultural diversity and inter-cultural understanding. This work has resulted in new articles about art from non-Western cultures. Translations of my English articles have appeared in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Indonesian, and Malay. I have needed to use or create a number of query tools to monitor and assist my work across multiple languages of Wikipedia, plus Commons and Wikidata. This has included inter-wiki watchlists, scripts to track changes in article quality, and queries to show which Featured Image awards my uploads have won. This session will show how I use these tools and how they can be adapted to your own work.

How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?

My project has involved collaboration with people I have never met, as we together improve the coverage of Islamic art and other under-represented art on Wikimedia platforms. I have worked in the open, sharing queries and processes on-wiki. This session will show attendees how they can use the same set of queries and tools in their own work to improve other topics.

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
