Description

[edit | edit source]

As of 6 March 2024, UNESCO has confirmed damage to 345 cultural heritage sites in Ukraine since the full scale Russian invasion of 24 February 2022. Ukraine’s own Ministry of Culture and Information Policy knows of 945 destroyed or damaged sites.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 in Ukraine was the second competition edition held since the full-scale invasion began. The local rules had to be changed to ensure safer participation; also, this year a need to document monuments even before they are destroyed was highlighted. In addition to a special category dedicated to collect photos of monuments destroyed by the war, other categories were influenced by the urgency to collect, preserve, and share knowledge: https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/04/05/war-destroys-monuments-the-toll-of-russian-invasion-of-ukraine-in-a-wiki-loves-monuments-special-category/

Lessons learnt and insights about organising a contest aimed at documenting cultural heritage while an active war is still happening will be shared during the lightning talk.
