Description

[edit | edit source]

The aim of the poster is to show how local teams can attract new participants and content by organising special categories, using the example of Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 in Ukraine contest. Wiki Loves Monuments has been organised in Ukraine since 2012, and almost every year there are some additional categories highlighted in the contest. This year there were eight special categories: “Videos”, "Photographic Film" (for uploaded pictures made on a photographic film), "Kharkiv Landmarks", "Jewish Heritage", “War destroys monuments” (for photos of monuments damaged or destroyed by the Russian war on Ukraine since 2014), "Elements of Exteriors", "German Heritage" and "Interiors".

Special categories can be used as a tool to highlight some particular relevant need (e.g. documenting destroyed monuments), a particular missing aspect (pictures of interiors), a need to preserve disappearing heritage (buildings of the German colonists are getting remodelled and are not protected by law in most cases) etc.

Wikimedia Ukraine has had great success with special categories allowing new partnerships, attracting new participants, and getting new content.
