Welcome to the official page for the Wikimania 2025 Pre-Conference, taking place on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025!
This part of the event is designed to bring together Wikimedia communities, affiliates, and partners for workshops, strategy discussions, technical collaboration, and capacity-building before the main conference. It offers a mix of formal and informal sessions—rehearsals, edit-a-thons, meetups, and governance meetings—that help set the tone for the full Wikimania experience.
Dates & Format
- Date: Tuesday, August 5th, 2025
- Time: Programming runs throughout the day and concludes at 5:00 PM Kenyan time. The Hackathon Social will follow, from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM Kenyan time.
- Format: A mix of thematic sessions, training, edit-a-thons, technical work, and social activities.
Overview of Pre-Conference Tracks


Pre-conference events currently being planned include:
- Hackathon Preconference – A space for developers, tool builders, and technical contributors to work on Wikimedia tools and bots. The pre-conference event will feature light programming including an onboarding to Codex and a social in the evening.
- WikiWomen* Summit – Gender equity sessions focusing on empowerment, strategy, and content gaps.
- Advocacy Workshop – A workshop that brings together Wikimedians dedicated to public policy advocacy, tackle ongoing issues related to AI and Copyright, sharpen external communication skills, and enhance our collective impact.
- Child Safety Training – A training for Wikimedians on how to protect children on our projects. Lead by a professional with decades long experience in law enforcement and trust and safety. We will learn about the basics of child safety online, the threats to be aware of on Wikimedia platforms and how to react.
- Building Inclusive Communities Through Language - A collaboration between the Wikimedia Language Diversity Hub and WikiTongues to promote language diversity across Wikimedia projects.
- Information Integrity on Climate Change – Exploring Wikimedia’s role in reliable environmental knowledge.
- Analyzing and Improving climate coverage across Wikimedia - A collaboration between Wikimedians, Human Rights Watch and Greenpeace focused on analyzing and documenting climate content gaps on Wikimedia projects. Sessions include introductions to climate migration and climate justice from subject matter experts, as well as an edit-a-thon focused on analyzing existing content for practical editing.
- Strategies and challenges to start Wikimedia Projects conversations in libraries – Strengthening partnerships with library communities.
- WikiTongues – Language diversity, oral knowledge, and language preservation strategies.
- Governance Meetups – Including AffCom, Board candidate meetups and more.
- Users with Extended Rights Convening - This event will bring together dozens of administrators and other users with extended rights from various Wikimedia projects to a first-of-its-kind gathering!
- Global GLAM Meetup - Will bring together members of the global GLAM-Wiki community, and those interested in joining, to explore possible collaborations, effective organizing, advocacy, and networking and agenda setting for 2025-2026.
- Communicating as human beings. An introduction to nonviolent communication - A workshop for beginners on Nonviolent communication - an approach to communication that seeks empathic dialogue and understanding among all parties.
- AfroCROWD OpenStreetMap Wikimania Map-a-Edit-a-thon Workshop: Mapping the Global Impact of Kenya and It's Diaspora, with AfroCROWD, OpenStreetMap, Kenya, Vintage Dreams Africa, and Wikimedia Kenya - a hands-on workshop designed to highlight the global impact of the Kenyan diaspora.
