Curious about how an illustration contest works and how educators can widely use its results?
This session will explain the full journey of the Kontes Ilustrasi Bahan Ajar (Teaching Material Illustration Contest), held in October 2024 in Indonesia. From conducting a survey to identify educators' illustration needs, transforming the insights into contest guidelines, guiding participants to upload their work to Wikimedia Commons, to encouraging educators to integrate these illustrations into their teaching materialsâthis session covers it all from A to Z.
Description
Creative Commons Indonesia and the Gimpscape ID Community held a teaching material illustration contest in October 2024. This contest was held to produce open-licensed assets that can be used by educators to create digital teaching materials.
From the beginning, we involved kindergarten-elementary school educators to participate in filling out a survey of the illustrations they needed to create teaching materials. After that, we processed the survey results to be used as competition guidelines. From this contest, more than 200 illustrations have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and some have been reused by educators to create teaching materials.
- How does your session relate to the event theme, Wikimania@20 â Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability?
This session aligns with Inclusivity, Impact, and Sustainability by ensuring that the illustrations produced truly meet educators' needs. From the start, we conducted a survey to understand what kind of visuals would be most useful in teaching materials, making the final illustrations highly relevant and reusable. The contest resulted in over 200 open-licensed illustrations uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, many of which are already being used by educators. To support sustainability, all illustrations are in .svg format, allowing easy modifications while still crediting the original creators. By making these resources freely available and fostering collaboration between educators and illustrators, this initiative ensures long-term accessibility and continuous impact in education.
- What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
