2025:Program/Global repositories of knowledge: find and using United Nations data and content on Wikimedia projects

Session title: Global repositories of knowledge: find and using United Nations data and content on Wikimedia projects
- Session type: Poster
- Track: Partnerships
- Language: en
This poster will summarize the main sources of information and content the United Nations produces across its areas of expertise, categorised using the Sustainable Development Goals to help Wikimedians explore and find information they want to share with the world through Wikimedia projects.
Description
The poster aims to help to improve the quality of information on Wikimedia projects related to some of the world’s most important issues. We will achieve this through producing a poster to help Wikimedians find and use data and content in their areas of interest from across the UN system framed through the structure of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Structure The different repositories of knowledge from the agencies categorised by Sustainable Development Goals will help Wikimedians find useful information to share with the public. This poster will then be refined by user feedback into an online resource to allow more Wikimedians to find and use useful content from across the UN system.
UN knowledge The UN system collates and shares vast knowledge resources from all countries around the world on a huge range of topics. The UN acts as a ‘global observatory’, collating data from all countries related to Sustainable Development Goals.
1. Poverty 2. Hunger 3. Health 4. Education 5. Gender equality 6. Water and sanitation 7. Energy 8. Work and economics 9. Industry, Innovation, Technology and Infrastructure 10. Sustainable cities and communities 11. Inequality 12. Responsible consumption and production 13. Climate change 14. Life below water 15. Life on land 16. Peace, justice and strong institutions 17. Partnerships
The UN system’s knowledge resources are high-quality, multilingual, freely available and often published under Creative commons licences. The UN has been producing knowledge for over 75 years, creating 10,000s of publications, 100,000s of images, videos, audio and other resources.
This poster is proposed as an addition to another poster which will attempt to summarize some of the major past and ongoing partnership initiatives with UN agencies and shed light on their long lasting impact for the Wikimedia community.
- How does your session relate to the event theme, Wikimania@20 – Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability?
The UN secretariat and the specialized agencies of the United Nations have a broad mandate, global reach and commitment to sustainability. The Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by all United Nations members, mandate sustainability in all areas they cover. Most of the content the UN produces relates to sustainability and impact.
Multipartner efforts involving UN agencies and Wikimedia chapters, as well as Wikimedians-in-Residence, contribute to building reciprocal trust and understanding and ensuring the sustainability of knowledge-sharing over time.
