In an era where reliance on major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Meta, Zoom, Slack, ... have become the norm in most organizations (including most Wikimedia organizations), we must confront the potential risks associated with this deep dependency. This presentation will explore the "Worst-Case Scenarios" (not so absurd) that could arise if a single company were to exploit its control over software and devices used by volunteers and people who collaborate on Wikimedia. We will discuss the implications on the safety and autonomy of both individuals and organizations within the Wikimedia Movement. Furthermore, we will highlight proactive measures that can be taken to safeguard our community, emphasizing the importance of adopting ethical Free Software alternatives.

Description

This session will explore the critical risks associated with the reliance on proprietary software from major tech companies within the Wikimedia Movement. We will examine potential scenarios where such software could be exploited to compromise the safety and autonomy of volunteers and organizations. By raising more awareness of these software vulnerabilities, we aim to highlight the importance of adopting ethical Free Software and Open Source Software alternatives that prioritize user privacy and independence and the Movement's sustainability. Participants will gain insights into practical strategies for protecting themselves and their organizations against the influence of Big Tech, fostering a more secure and resilient infrastructure for Free Knowledge. Together, we can empower our community to thrive without corporate constraints.

This session directly relates to the event theme of Wikimania@20 by addressing the inclusivity and sustainability issues posed by Closed-Source software in the Wikimedia Movement. We will discuss how this Closed (Proprietary) software can marginalize minority voices, facilitate censorship, surveillance, and compromise volunteer security, ultimately undermining collaborative efforts. By advocating for Ethical Free Software alternatives, we aim to promote a more inclusive environment that empowers all participants while also considering the environmental impact of our technological choices, fostering a sustainable future for Free Knowledge.
