In order to get approval for a new language edition of a Wikimedia project, you need to start a test project in the Wikimedia Incubator to show that there is a viable community for your project. This session aims to teach and demonstrate how you actually get started, and give some tips and best practices for new communities.
Description
This session will cover:
- What the process is to get a new language edition of a Wikimedia project approved.
- How to get started with a new "test wiki" in the Wikimedia Incubator.
- Where to ask for help: The community portal (village pump), the Wikimedia Language Diversity Hub, regional hubs.
- The requirements for getting a test wiki approved.
The aim of the session is that participants will:
- Know more about how the Incubator actually works
- Know how to get started with a brand new project in the Wikimedia Incubator
- Know where to ask for help or assistance if they need it
- Be inspired to start their journey towards a new language Wikimedia project
- How does your session relate to the event theme, Wikimania@20 â Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability?
Activity in the Incubator is related to both inclusivity (of new languages) and impact, as new projects can make a large impact on their local language communities.

- I have been a Wikimedian since 2005, serving in various roles throughout the years; my home wiki is the Norwegian BokmÄl Wikipedia, but I am also active in several other sister projects, including especially the Wikimedia Incubator, Wikidata and Wikisource, and as a tech contributor. I have been part of the Wikimedia language committee since its inception in 2006, and since 2016 I have been a full-time employee of Wikimedia Norge.
