Climate change and the environment have been topics of impact around which Wikimedia communities have developed interesting campaigns, projects, and partnerships in recent years. Within this framework, the Working Group on Climate Justice and Wikimedia Projects in Latin America, in collaboration with UNEP and the Wikimedia Foundation, is proposing a side event ahead of Wikimania to explore how the Wikimedia Movement can contribute to international efforts aimed at promoting climate change information integrity.

This panel will serve as a space to share the key discussions that will take place during the side event, as well as to invite strategic allies to exchange reflections and ideas for future collaboration—particularly from a South-South cooperation perspective.

Description

Panelists included:

  • Olga Lidia Paredes Alcoreza, Coordinator at Wikimedistas de Bolivia, and part of the Working Group on Climate Justice and Wikimedia Projects
  • Faye Holder, Head of Special Projects, Influencemap, and member of Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD)

How does your session relate to the event theme, Wikimania@20 – Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability?

Information integrity is foundational to Wikimedia’s work, yet our role as strategic partners in strengthening the information ecosystem on climate change often goes overlooked by some strategic partners who share these priorities. This gap prevents us from fully showcasing how the Wikimedia Movement combat information gaps, elevate underrepresented knowledge, and scale knowledge equity worldwide.

Through this panel we want to share some reflexions, experiences and collective thinking about how through partnerships within the Wikimedia Movement and with mission-aligned strategic allies like UNEP we can amplify our collective impact, extend our reach to new communities, and contribute—through our projects and communities—to one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: safeguarding climate change information integrity.
