I would like to present 1) a historical overview of the different ways to share music in audio and textual form 2) a short description of the different digital resources hosted on commons (with pros and cons) 3) the implementation of the Score extension in MediaWiki enabling people to both transcribe and reuse music into wikitext.

Description

1) A historical overview of the different ways to share music in audio and textual form

  • Music has been an orally transmitted medium for centuries, but eventually it found its own "alphabets"
  • The impossibility to record a performance has affected the approach to written music.
  • That led to a theoretical and practical way of thinking music.

2) As Wikimedia projects aim to share and describe free knowledge music was an important part of such knowledge but in 2001 Mediawiki was not exactly designed to share sound.

  • Today we can share both audio files and image files, but written music poses a challenge about the definition itself of "What we actually share"
  • IMSLP, Choralwiki and other projects show alternative ways to share written music, very valuable but a little less "wiki"

3) Since years Wikisource has been transcribing more and more written music with the <score> extension, using the Lilypond approach to music typesetting: it addresses both the readers' and the wiki editors' needs by showing well written music, a midi output and an editable wikitext.

  • Some examples provide an idea to what can be done: musical scores, snippets, quotations can be easily shared to different projects.
  • this is a very powerful resorce but it needs to be known and explained as its learning curve is quite steep. that is why this presentation is about the importance of Wikisource as an "actual source" for written music.

4) Question time...

How does your session relate to the event theme, Wikimania@20 – Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability?

As a Wikieditor and an enthusiast reader and listener of music from many ages and many places I dream of Wiki musical typesetting as an invaluable way for people from any corner of the globe to transcribe and share in an editable way any musical heritage related to music.

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?

Everyone can participate in this session

I have been an enthousiast Wikieditor for twenty years, and after a well spent period of hyperactivity on the Italian Wikipedia I landed on the Italian Wikisource where I found my home and collaborated in building a thriving and healthy community. I am interested in cultural considerations, linguistics, document preservation, UCoC, and facilitation skills. I have collaborated with many outstanding people in this fields, alway willing to share what I learned and improve the Wikimedia community.
