Description

The preservation of history extends far beyond the mere collection and storage of information—it is a collective responsibility that demands accessibility, inclusivity, and long-term sustainability. In an era defined by digital advancements, multimedia historical archives have become indispensable for documenting cultural heritage, amplifying diverse voices, and ensuring the free exchange of knowledge. Wikimedia Commons, as a globally accessible and collaborative platform, provides an unparalleled opportunity to create and safeguard these archives. However, to truly maximize its impact, it must foster participation across generations, particularly by empowering young people and older adults. Their unique perspectives, experiences, and skills not only enrich the historical record but also strengthen the movement toward a more comprehensive and representative digital heritage.

The importance of multimedia archives lies in their ability to capture history beyond text. Photographs, videos, and audio recordings allow for a deeper understanding of cultural traditions, historical events, and personal experiences. However, the process of creating these archives should not be exclusive to a single demographic. Young contributors bring technological skills and innovative approaches, while older generations offer firsthand accounts, historical insights, and lived experiences. By fostering intergenerational collaboration, Wikimedia Commons can become a more inclusive and comprehensive repository of history.

My own experience in creating Memories on Wheels: The Evolution of Ancient and Classic Automobiles in Aguascalientes and the Creation of a Historical Archive in Wikimedia Commons demonstrated the power of such collaboration. This project documented the history of classic and antique automobiles, engaging both younger and older generations in the creation of a digital archive. This experience reinforced the idea that inclusivity in digital archival work not only enriches the historical record but also strengthens community engagement with open knowledge platforms.

Beyond inclusivity, the impact of multimedia archives on Wikimedia Commons extends to knowledge-sharing on a global scale. However, there is still much to be done to ensure that historical archives remain relevant and continue to grow. Expanding participation across generations allows for a broader and more representative documentation of history, preventing the loss of cultural heritage that often occurs when historical knowledge is confined to specific groups.

Sustainability is another critical factor in the success of digital historical archives. Ensuring their longevity requires continuous contributions from new and experienced Wikimedians alike. By encouraging young people and older adults to engage with Wikimedia Commons, we can create a lasting impact, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility for preserving history. Initiatives that bridge generational gaps not only help sustain digital archives but also cultivate a culture of collaborative knowledge-sharing.

History is not just something to be remembered, it is something to be actively preserved and shared. Wikimedia Commons offers the tools to achieve this, but its success depends on inclusive participation. By engaging contributors of all ages, we can ensure that history is documented in a way that is diverse, accessible, and enduring for generations to come.

How does your session relate to the event theme, Wikimania@20 – Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability?

By engaging both young people and older adults in archival creation, we break barriers to participation, ensuring inclusivity in historical documentation. The impact of these archives extends beyond individual contributions, preserving cultural heritage through openly accessible multimedia resources. Additionally, sustainability is reinforced by encouraging intergenerational collaboration, ensuring that historical documentation remains relevant and that future generations continue contributing. I’m a graduate in Art Studies and Cultural Management, and I started my Wikimedia journey at 18 in 2021 through the Wiki Education programme by Wikimedia MĂ©xico. I was the first at my university to complete a social service project with Wikimedia, which greatly shaped my relationship with the movement. As a member of Wikimedia MĂ©xico, I’ve contributed to projects like Memories on Wheels: The Evolution of Ancient and Classic Automobiles in Aguascalientes, combining my academic background with my passion for history and digital archiving. I edit in Spanish, English, and French, focusing on art, culture, anime, comics, antique cars, and my home state, Aguascalientes, and enjoy uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons.
I’ve contributed to events such as Wiki Loves MĂ©xico 2021, EAyGC Patrimonio Cultural and EAyGC Arte Mexicano in 2022, EditatĂłn FilĂłsofas, Artistas y Pensadoras 2024, and Juntas en Internet 2024, promoting women’s visibility. As a speaker, I presented at 5to Encuentro de Wiki EducaciĂłn 2024 and Wikiconference North America 2024. I was also Executive Producer for EditatĂłn Artistas de Aguascalientes 2024. In2025, I volunteered at Wikimedia+Libraries International Convention and am the lead organiser for Wiki Loves Folklore in Mexico. I attended Wikimania 2024 online and will be part of the Youth Conference Prague 2025, discussing the role of youth in Wikimedia.
