Many chapters and local groups face restrictive legislation when it comes to sharing digitizations of public domain works online. Wikimedia projects like Wikimedia Commons are among the natural resources for Internet users, but doesn't always benefits public domain artworks. In France, a 2015 law allows GLAMs to sell these digitizations of public domain works. What's the situation in your country? The Label Culture Libre had its 3rd edition in 2025 and rewards GLAMs who open their public domain collections under a free license and contribute to Wikimedia projects. This project is at once a recognition for GLAMs, a tool for encouraging change in public policies, and perhaps one day a signpost for online audiences.

We believe that this project could be replicated, in various countries represented in the Wikimedia movement.

Many chapters and local groups face restrictive legislation when it comes to sharing digitizations of public domain works online. Wikimedia projects like Wikimedia Commons are among the natural resources for Internet users, but they are denied many opportunities to reuse these images.

We believe that this project could be replicated, with adjustments to local laws, in various countries represented in the Wikimedia movement.

This workshop would be an opportunity to lay the foundations for its replicability, through discussions followed by a workshop.

Some questions that will be addressed based on the French example : - How can I get involved as a volunteer? - How do I set up the project as a chapter? - What are the local laws in my country? - Would the label be a good tool to implement at national level?

What is the added value of this workshop? This session deals with a GLAM topic that proposes a very concrete project involving interaction between employees and volunteers.

What is the objectives of the workshop ? The aim of this workshop is to lay the foundations for a non-standardized international version of the Free Culture Label, and to set up an initial working group on the subject. It should also enable each participant to discover copyright policies in the different countries represented (if known). Last but not least, it will provide an opportunity to modify or create the volunteer missions proposed each year.

What will I learn/produce with this workshop? - Discovering copyright contexts in different countries - Discover the challenges and difficulties of the Label Culture Libre project - The workshop will produce initial elements which will then be used to develop collaboration between chapters. -Reinforce links between GLAM lovers around a concrete project.

How does your session relate to the event theme, Wikimania@20 – Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability?

The Culture Libre label is a high-impact project designed to help transform GLAM's missions by integrating Wikimedia projects and open content. It is also a long-term project, since it will last as long as there are GLAMs to label.

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?

Some experience will be needed

I've joined the Wikimedia France team in 2016 and working since 2018 on the question of the role of Wikimedia projects in cultural institutions. I provide help and educational support to institutions or networks wishing to embark on the adventure of GLAM. I deal with partnerships, open content issues and lobbying, GLAM project like the Label Culture Libre. I've attended several GlamWiki and Wikimania events by the past.
I have quite strong knowledge about free licences.
