This session presents the outcomes of WikiDiplomasi, a project to address critical gaps in diplomacy and international relations coverage on Indonesian Wikipedia. We highlight our efforts to improve content quality and quantity, expand visibility among key audiences, and build a sustainable editing community. Participants will learn about our methodology in enhancing and creating new articles, while addressing challenges like sourcing trusted references and engaging new contributors. The session will also explore future opportunities for collaboration with academic and diplomatic institutions to further strengthen Wikipedia as a trusted resource for Indonesian readers. Join us to discuss how this initiative supports broader knowledge equity goals in the Wikimedia movement.

Description

Diplomacy-related topics are often inadequately covered and written on Indonesian Wikipedia. Moreover, emerging diplomacy and international relations topics, such as public diplomacy, trade diplomacy, and transnational organized crime are underrepresented on Indonesian Wikipedia. This lack of comprehensive and reliable information limits public knowledge and resources available to students, researchers, and public in general. This session shares the results of an ongoing initiative to improve Indonesian Wikipedia’s coverage of diplomacy and international relations. We detail our approach in enhancing both the quality and quantity of articles. Key strategies included expanding existing articles, creating new articles with verified sources, and increasing engagement with students, academia, and practitioners to boost readership and utility. I will discuss the current progresses and challenges as well as opportunities for deeper collaboration with universities, think tanks, and diplomatic institutions to close the content gaps and create a community of new contributors. The session invites participants to explore how similar initiatives can be replicated in other underrepresented language Wikipedias, contributing to the broader Wikimedia goals of inclusivity and knowledge equity.

How does your session relate to the event theme, Wikimania@20 – Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability?

This session aligns with Wikimania@20's themes by making Indonesian Wikipedia more inclusive, impactful, and sustainable in covering diplomacy and international relations. It promotes inclusivity by addressing knowledge and content gaps in Indonesian language, ensuring local communities can access global diplomatic concepts, theories, histories, and important figures in their native language. The project creates impact by developing practical resources for students, academia, and general public to better understand international relations and diplomacy realm. Sustainability comes through training new editors and building partnerships with universities and diplomatic institutions to maintain high-quality content long-term. By improving representation of Indonesia's role in global affairs while empowering local contributors, this initiative embodies Wikimedia's mission of creating equitable, enduring knowledge for all. The session particularly highlights how bridging content gaps can make Wikipedia more inclusive for Global South contributors and readers, demonstrating how local language projects strengthen the broader Wikimedia ecosystem. Through collaborative editing and community engagement, we're working toward a Wikipedia that truly reflects diverse perspectives on international relations.
