Session title: Wiki Loves Documentation – Assam Chapter

Session type: Poster
Track: GLAM
Language: en

This presentation will highlight the Wiki Loves Documentation – Assam Chapter, an initiative focused on preserving and sharing Assam’s cultural heritage through Wikimedia platforms. Beginning in December 2024, the project systematically documented rare manuscripts, cultural artifacts, and oral histories by collaborating with local communities, historians, and GLAM institutions. Key efforts included digitizing valuable texts, training volunteers, and making heritage resources freely accessible on Wikimedia Commons.

The session will showcase the project's achievements, including digitized materials from multiple districts, community engagement strategies, and the challenges faced in preservation efforts. It will also outline future plans to expand documentation to remote areas, strengthen partnerships, and implement advanced preservation methods. Attendees will gain insights into how open knowledge platforms can play a vital role in heritage conservation and how similar initiatives can be replicated globally.

Description

The Wiki Loves Documentation – Assam Chapter is an initiative dedicated to preserving and sharing Assam’s rich cultural heritage through the Wikimedia platform. Launched in December 2024, this project focuses on systematically documenting rare manuscripts, cultural artifacts, and oral histories to ensure their accessibility for future generations. The project collaborates with local historians, cultural institutions, and community members to digitize and upload valuable heritage materials to Wikimedia Commons, making them freely available to the global public.

Aims and Objectives:

Preservation of Cultural Heritage: Digitize and document rare manuscripts, ancient texts, and cultural artifacts to prevent the loss of valuable historical materials.

Open Knowledge Sharing: Upload digitized content to Wikimedia Commons, ensuring free and unrestricted access to Assam’s cultural heritage.

Community Engagement: Collaborate with local communities, historians, and cultural organizations to encourage active participation in the documentation process.

Oral History Collection: Record interviews with historians, scholars, and community members to capture oral narratives that provide deeper insights into Assam’s cultural evolution.

Collaboration with GLAM Institutions: Work with Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAM) to access rare collections and improve documentation quality.

Expanding Documentation Coverage: Focus on historically significant regions within Assam, ensuring a diverse representation of cultural elements.

Project Execution and Achievements:

The project successfully covered key regions in Assam, including Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Charaideo, and Nagaon districts. A systematic approach was adopted, involving:

Identification and Digitization: Rare manuscripts, religious texts, and cultural artifacts were scanned and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons for public access.

Community Workshops and Training: Local volunteers were trained to handle delicate manuscripts and contribute to Wikimedia projects.

Oral History Collection: Interviews were conducted with local historians and community elders to document cultural narratives.

GLAM Collaboration: Partnerships were established with institutions to facilitate access to historical collections.

Increased Public Engagement: Awareness campaigns encouraged locals to participate in heritage preservation efforts.

Challenges Faced:

Limited Resources for Preservation: Advanced conservation techniques were not always accessible, making it difficult to safeguard fragile materials.

Restricted Access to Private Collections: Some institutions and individuals were hesitant to share rare materials.

Delicate Handling of Manuscripts: Certain texts were too fragile to be frequently handled, requiring careful documentation.

Language Barriers: Some manuscripts were written in archaic or regional dialects, necessitating expert translation and interpretation.

Future Plans:

Moving forward, the project aims to:

Expand to Remote Areas: Identify and document heritage materials in underserved regions of Assam.

Strengthen Volunteer Training: Develop more workshops to equip volunteers with better documentation skills.

Enhance GLAM Partnerships: Collaborate with more institutions to access a broader range of historical materials.

Secure Funding for Advanced Preservation: Seek grants and sponsorships to improve conservation techniques.

Increase Global Awareness: Promote Assamese cultural heritage internationally through Wikimedia and related platforms.

The Wiki Loves Documentation – Assam Chapter is a significant step toward preserving and sharing Assam’s cultural heritage. By leveraging the Wikimedia platform, the project ensures that valuable historical resources remain accessible to scholars, researchers, and the public.
