Information on safety
We are aware of and monitoring the recent protests going on in and around downtown Nairobi (the area known as the Central Business District or CBD). The event organisers will continue to monitor the situation and will advise attendees if the situation changes.
Wikimania will be held in Gigiri, home to the United Nations and many embassies from around the world. It is physically in a different part of Nairobi from where the protests are taking place. In addition, the organising team has been working very closely with venue security and surrounding areas and we have plans in place to make sure everyone is safe including shuttle buses from the airport to and from hotels and also between venues. These protests have been confined to areas that Wikimania attendees would not need to travel to during the event. We encourage all attendees to book their accommodation in Westlands and Gigiri neighborhoods where the vast majority of the conference will be staying. Travel anywhere in the world cannot by its very nature be 100% safe. Nairobi is host to several international conferences including Open Street Map's, State of the Map, CGIAR Science week, and the Ted Talks Countdown Summit. All travellers are encouraged to get travel insurance and make sure to understand any policy exclusions. Any attendees feeling uneasy can switch to attending virtually at any point.
