Essential material

For external messaging workshop

  • The Wikipedia Test: Blog post introducing new advocacy tool that the Wikimedia Foundation has developed for advocates and policymakers to use to evaluate internet policies and identify how these might be improved.
  • Wikipedia 25: Hub on Meta-Wiki to find content to celebrate and communicate Wikipedia's 25th birthday.
  • Wikimedia Europe template to develop a communications strategy
  • Changemakers' Toolkit This 2024 toolkit offers free, self-guided training modules on essential skills required for advocacy work. It was developed by Wikimedia UK in partnership with the Sheila McKechnie Foundation. Two modules are particularly useful. Module 2, "analysing the problem and planning for change," helps you plan impactful campaigns and use tools like the Problem Tree to build a campaign strategy. Module 3, "communication for change," will help you target your key audiences and how to frame an impactful message for each stakeholder group. The toolkit is also available as a course on WikiLearn.
  • Example of compelling storytelling and messaging: Video of Malala Yousafzai.
  • Example of an effective spokesperson: Video of Jacinda Ardern.

For copyright & AI position development

  • Blog post explaining how the scraping of Wikipedia content for AI development is harming our infrastructure.
  • Examples of policy position primers from other organizations: Paradigm Initiative (great for brevity) and Open Rights Group (great for structure).
  • Slides describing how to write a policy position summary in 8 easy steps
Guide to writing a policy position in 8 easy steps.
  • Template to help you develop a policy position primer.
Template to write a policy position primer (a primer is shorter than a comprehensive policy position document).
