Normal visas granted by any Schengen member are valid in all countries that have signed and implemented the treaty (with exceptions for some overseas territories). The granting country may offer additional rights (such as longer stays or right to work) that apply only locally.
Scholars sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation will be covered under the Foundation's travel health insurance policy and will directly receive information pertaining to that policy.
To find out if you need a visa to enter France, please check the France Visas website. The visa wizard will walk you through questions about your profile, your stay, and travel documents. If asked about your plans, most Wikimania attendees including Scholars should select “Tourism”. (Please note: Those attending Wikimania for paid work on behalf of WMF or an affiliate will usually select "Professional".) If you do need a visa, it will provide you with a detailed list of supporting documents required and what steps you need to take.
Please start the process as early as possible, as appointments at French Visa Application Centres are in high demand, and must be booked well in advance of your departure.
Once your attendance at Wikimania is confirmed, and you need a formal letter of invitation to upload with your visa application:
- 一般の参加者の皆さんは、 右までご連絡願います:adelaide.calais[AT]wikimedia.fr もしくは wikimania@wikimedia.org
For visitors from the EU, the EEA, and visa-exempt countries for stays of less than 90 days, please note that you must have a valid ID card or passport, even if you do not need to apply for a visa.
If your flight includes a layover, you may need a transit visa depending on your nationality, even to remain in the transit zone. It is essential to check the requirements of each layover country on their official consular websites before your departure.
Travelers should be ready to present the following supporting documents upon arrival in France, if you are entering the Schengen area from a third country and are not exempt:
- A valid passport issued less than 10 years before and valid for at least 3 months (preferably 6) after your planned departure date
- Sufficient financial means to cover expenses during your visit (65 euros per day with hotel booking or 120 euros a day without)

- Your official invitation letter to Wikimania
