Wikimania Day Zero Advocacy Workshop

Welcome to the Wikimania Day Zero Advocacy Workshop

The Global Advocacy team, along with Wikimedians from the Advocacy Network community, are excited to announce an advocacy workshop the day before Wikimania - 5 August 2025 in Nairobi.

This meeting is open to Wikimedians with prior experience in advocacy and public policy. It will consist of two main parts:

A Messaging Workshop during which professionals from the Wikimedia Foundation will help Wikimedians develop the necessary skills and acquire the necessary knowledge to communicate effectively with media, lawmakers and other stakeholders. We will tackle the challenge of how to convey the overarching, global narrative our movement wants to present and connect it with a specific, local ask.

A Copyright & AI Workshop will take participants on a journey through the many questions AI poses for the knowledge ecosystem. Which tools are OK to be used and how? How to do we handle attribution? Which licensing makes sense? Is the current legal framework adequate? How far does copyright extend? The goal is to arrive at a point where we can start drafting a global policy position for our movement.

  • Refreshments: Basic Tea/Coffee will be available throughout, as well as some snacks.
