Event:Wikimania/Day Zero Child Safety Training
Wikimedia Europe, supported by the The Global Advocacy team, is organising a Child Safety Training for active project editors the day before Wikimania - 5 August 2025 in Nairobi.
Trainer
This training will be lead a very experienced professional - Andrew Briercliffe - who has a decades-long experience in online harms, trust & safety and online child protection for both law enforcement authorities and online platforms.
Agenda
The exact agenda is to be confirmed, but we will go through three main points:
- Basics of child safety online
- Threats to be aware of on Wikimedia platforms
- Assessing situations & how to react
Background
Child protection is an important task and challenge for our movement. On the projects the task is handled by both, the Wikimedia Foundation Trust & Safety team and volunteer editors. And while the Trust & Safety team has professional tools, procedures and experience, volunteers might struggle when confronted serious and stressful situation, however rare or unlikely this is.
Such a training is also one of the recommendations of the Child Rights Impact Assessment, commissioned by the Wikimedia Movement.
Additionally, during a session on child safety online at Wikimania 2024 in Katowice one of the agreed goals by the group was to offer our volunteers assistance and training on this issue.
