Lessons from Wiki loves YOG
In October 2018, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the 3rd Summer Youth Olympic Games were held. For this event, an international group of six Wikimedia volunteers got accreditations and made over the days lots of images of the different sportive events.
In our session, the attendees to the Wikimania 2019 of us six would like to talk about our project. We would like to show you with our example, what you need to take advantage, and what to do when you organize such an event from the first ideas up to the uploads of files to Wikimedia Commons. Some of the topics could be:
- how to come together internationally
- how to organize over borders
- how to talk to organizations such as the IOC or national sports associations
- what you need to think on, when you travel as an official accredited journalist/photographer
- what you need to think on, when you travel with a lot (and partial expensive) of equipment
- how to organize your work at the event sites (for example schedule, maps and so on)
- which equipment is needed and how to work with it
- how to organize the work on Wiki
- how to mass upload
- how to categorize, to use the images
- how to work with Wikidata
- how to make friends
A lot of these things seem to be trivial, but it often is not.
