Wikimania 2029 Expression of Interest: Dublin, Ireland

1. Proposing Team

  • Experience: WCI is a professionally staffed affiliate operating under a Multi-Year General Support Fund. Our team has successfully delivered international events, including the Celtic Knot Wikimedia Languages Conference and the multi-year, EU-funded WikiWomen Erasmus+ project. We have a robust governance structure and a proven "Meitheal" (cooperative work) volunteer model.

2. The Vision: "Sustaining Voices, Sustaining Earth"

Our theme, "Sustaining Voices, Sustaining Earth: Language, Heritage, and Climate Resilience," addresses the dual crises of linguistic extinction and ecological degradation.

  • Ecological Preservation: Building on our Wiki Loves Earth success, we will showcase Wiki Muir (Sea)—a cross-border marine heritage initiative—and our partnerships with Ulster Wildlife and World Oceans Day. We aim to demonstrate how open knowledge serves as a critical baseline for climate action.
  • Linguistic Sovereignty: Ireland serves as a living laboratory for language revitalization. We will explore how indigenous languages hold unique ecological knowledge (such as logainmneacha or placenames) that is essential for biodiversity conservation.
  • Diversity & Justice: Using the frameworks of Wiki Loves Pride and Art+Feminism, we will ensure that the narratives of those most affected by climate change and language loss are central to the program.

3. Host City: Dublin

Dublin is a premier global hub for technology and culture, offering world-class logistics for an international movement.

  • Global Connectivity: Dublin Airport is a major transatlantic and European gateway.
  • Venues: We propose using sustainability-certified venues at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and Dublin City University (DCU), both of which have hosted Wikimedia residencies and the ADAPT Centre for digital technology.
  • Visa Support: As an EU member state, Ireland provides a clear travel framework. WCI has extensive experience navigating visa support for international delegates through our scholarship programs.

4. Capacity and Operations

WCI is prepared to scale its existing operations to accommodate a global influx of attendees.

  • Strategic Partners: We have established support from the National Library of Ireland, Historic Houses of Ireland, and the National Built Heritage Service.
  • Technical Strength: In collaboration with the DCU ADAPT Centre, we will leverage AI and translation tools to bridge the gap between minority languages and global knowledge.

5. Safety, Inclusion, and Friendly Space

  • Safety: Ireland is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries globally.
  • Inclusion: We celebrate Ireland's legacy as the first country to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. We will enforce a strict Friendly Space Policy and offer a welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ Wikimedians through our "Queering Wikipedia" initiatives.
  • Accessibility: All venues will be fully ADA compliant, and we will provide dedicated spaces for quiet reflection and neurodivergent attendees.

6. Hybrid Strategy: "Digital Activism"

We propose a hybrid model that goes beyond passive streaming:

  • Translation Marathons: Utilizing the Language Diversity Hub and CapX tools for real-time content creation.
  • Remote Bio-Blitzes: Enabling Wikimedians worldwide to contribute ecological data to Commons during the event, ensuring those who cannot travel are active participants in our "Sustaining Earth" mission.
