Framing

Hi everyone! Thanks for joining us. This is a casual feedback session about a project idea for celebrating WP25. Product and tech in collaboration with the Comms team are exploring ways to add discoverable, opt-in ‘easter eggs’ on Wikipedia.org and possibly some language Wikipedias without changing any core content or disrupting editor workflows.

An Easter egg is a message, image, or feature hidden in software, a video game, a film, or another—usually electronic—medium. Easter eggs are a reward for curious and dedicated fans. They should inspire feelings of discovery, surprise, delight, satisfaction as well as a sense of connection. Share link to MediaWiki page which includes imagery, and/or bring posters for review: w.wiki/Eupw

Warm-up prompt (10 min)

Goal: Invite storytelling and get people talking

Ask: Have you ever come across a fun Easter egg online—maybe in a game, an app, or a piece of software? What made it memorable or delightful for you? Please also share your name.

Go around the table or let people popcorn

Open discussion (20-30 min)

Question ideas:
  • What kind of easter egg would work best in your language Wikipedia?
  • Are there cultural considerations we should keep in mind?
  • What concerns would your community likely raise about a project like this?
  • If we wanted to try this in one or two language projects as a pilot, who should we talk to?
  • Idea jam:
    • Pick one idea/element/composition they’d love to see on their language Wikipedia or portal
    • Pick one idea they’d remix or combine differently
    • Pick one idea they’d prefer not to implement—and why
