2019:Growing Wikimedia's Readership/Increasing Wikimedia’s Readership: Advocating the change with SDG Goals
This is an Accepted submission for the Readership space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
[edit | edit source]Lack of name recognition challenges the Wikimedia movement's ability to invite new readers, contributors, and advocates to join our communities. If you don't know about Wikipedia, how can you use it, contribute to it, or advocate for it?
This session will have a presentation of the case studies of different projects from video campaigns, radio shows, online social media campaigns to offline billboard and rikshaw campaigns for improving Wikimedia readership by Foundation and Wikimedia communities. In the last few years, we did New Reader’s project in Mexico and a series of Inspire campaign projects by Wikimedia Community members in Iraq, Mexico, Nigeria, India and Nepal.
The second part will be a panel discussion where we will invite the organizers of Inspire campaigns, New Reader project leads, experts from community Marketing experiments and social media campaign experts from projects like WLM.
The focus of the discussion would be on strategizing about the past, current and upcoming awareness and marketing campaigns as Sustainable Development Goals of increasing the readership of Wikimedia overcoming the challenges of the Wikimedia movement's ability to invite new readers, contributors, and advocates to join our communities.
Relationship to the theme
[edit | edit source]This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: This session and the outcome of discussions will aid us in providing understanding about the community ideas and the sustainability of the past and the ongoing efforts to expand Wikimedia readership in a strategic direction: By 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us. Our efforts will be focused on quality education (SDG 4), reduced inequalities (SDG 10) and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17).
Session outcomes
[edit | edit source]At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved: Attendees will learn about various initiatives by Foundation and Wikimedia community for growing Wikimedia readership around the globe and where our goals fit within the SDG discourse. In addition, we will build upon the discussion to determine the next steps to further expand the readership in the developing countries and try to identify the current gaps and regional derivatives that influence the Wikimedia awareness among emerging communities.
