2019:Partnerships/What happens when you fail to build a partnership? Image Mining Project
This is an Accepted submission for the Partnerships space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
[edit | edit source]Over the years Wikimedia Israel had made a lot of efforts to build partnerships with GLAM institutions in Israel. Most the partnerships were not fruitful (e.g. few hundreds of images were upload to Wiki Commons, few articles were written etc) and did not last. The major archives in Israel found it hard to collaborate with us because of Copy Rights issues even when the images were dated from the first decades of the last century and are PD by former Israeli copyright statute (which was inherited from the British Mandate regime).
After consulting with lawyers who specialize in this field, Wikimedia Israel, decided to use specially design image-mining crawlers to extract the images from the archives’ servers. 28,000 images were upload to commons. These images present historical events, everyday life and historical public figures in the Holy Land, during a time span that stretches from the late days of the Ottoman Empire until the end of the British Mandate era.
The image-reclaiming project attracted the attention of the local mainstream media immediately and got a lot of coverage. The coverage was positive and often included an open discussion about the issue of copyrights and access to public documents.
In our lecture we will talk about the process image mining, its effects on WMIL and what can we learn from unsuccessful partnership.
