2019:Research/Despite the ban: doing good work anonymously on Wikipedia
This is an Accepted submission for the Research space at Wikimania 2019. |
Abstract
[edit | edit source]The ban on editing English Wikipedia from the anonymous browser Tor has been in place for over a decade. To what extent has the ban been effective in reducing vandalism versus prohibiting edits from would-be good faith editors who use Tor? In our research, we aim to answer this question empirically by qualitatively and quantitatively studying Tor contributors to Wikipedia despite the ban. In this presentation, we will explain what Tor is, why people use it, and present findings from several studies in which we show that Tor editors are not only within the expectations and norms of Wikipedia, they make similar contributions to other contributors and represent important perspectives that might otherwise be silenced.
