Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

Wiki Loves Names is a way of enriching Wikitonary with outdated ancient names and names that are going into extinction.

Description[edit source]

Africans attach a lot of importance to the names they bear; both individual names and names of their communities. There are varied reasons for this.

There are over thousands of African names not captured anywhere especially the ancient names and they are going into extinction, most of the young generation youths are not aware of the names and this will be worst if they are not documented now.

In the first edition, we used Igbo Wikitonary platform to test run the project, the project was so successful, we had 2 pieces of training, 2 Editathons and a contest.. At the end of the project we had 54 Editors, created 2.3K pages on Igbo Wiktionary, edited 2.32K pages and had a total edits of 2.87K.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

This project was very successful, and I believe that there are diverse communities that have struggled with preserving information that is going into extinction; my presentation will inspire them and help us brainstorm ways to collaborate on such projects toward better outcomes in the future.

I anticipate that my presentation will attract more communities to adopt this project and further solve the problem of equity, diversity and inclusion.
