Abstract

[edit source]

Wikipedia is a popular source of information on the internet, including in Indonesia. To understand Indonesian Wikipedia users’ behavior, we analyze a user survey (conducted in October 2022), and explore whether the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) can be applied to determine the factors influencing their actions on Wikipedia.

Description

[edit source]

In October 2022, we conducted a user survey on Indonesian Wikipedia. We received responses from 100 active editors. Of the respondents, 45 had been contributing for four years or more, and our analysis of their behavior was presented in a paper titled “Old Timers: Who They are & Why They Keep on Volunteering” at the ESEAP Conference 2022 in Sydney, Australia.

We are now conducting a further analysis, including all responses from the 100 respondents, comparing it to the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), a theory that explains and predicts individuals’ behavior based on their attitudes and subjective norms towards that behavior. We are looking whether TRA can be applied here to explain the motivations and intentions of Indonesian Wikipedia users to contribute and their attitudes towards it.

In this analysis, we did not differentiate between “old timer” and newer respondents, but rather considered all active users of Indonesian Wikipedia.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

This session aims to explain the motivations and behaviors of contributors to Indonesian Wikipedia.

Indonesia is an archipelagic country with more than 300 distinct ethnic and linguistic groups. Approximately half of its population of 273 million live in urban areas, while the other half live in rural areas. They practice six major religions and many other local beliefs. Despite these differences, the contributors of Indonesian Wikipedia are able to collaborate and work together.

I believe that the behavior of Indonesian Wikipedia contributors can serve as a reference for Wikipedians from other countries, especially for those who collaborate with and within diverse communities like ours. By doing so, we can continue to develop our community together towards the future.
