Abstract[edit source]

This talk highlights the work of Wikimedia Chile’s use of Wikidata as a tool for educational purposes. Additionally, the talk introduces a booklet designed for teachers and students to make the most out of Wikidata as a learning resource.

Description[edit source]

Wikimedia Chile has been working to incorporate Wikidata into the classroom to enhance the learning experience for students and provide a valuable resource for educators. The objective of this talk is to showcase the work that has been done by the chapter in using Wikidata as an educational tool, and to introduce the booklet that has been developed to aid both teachers and students. One of the main aims of this project is to increase engagement and interest in learning by providing students with a hands-on experience of data collection and analysis. By using Wikidata, students can access a plenty of information on a variety of topics, and are encouraged to contribute to the platform by adding their knowledge and research. This creates a sense of ownership and pride in their work, and fosters a more in-depth understanding of the subject. Another important objective is to provide teachers with a resource that can be used to support their lessons and enhance their teaching methods. The talk will cover the benefits of using Wikidata in the classroom, such as the ability to access and analyze a vast amount of data, the development of critical thinking skills, and the promotion of collaboration and communication among students. It will also provide examples of how WMCL approaches the use of Wikidata in different educational backgrounds. Finally, the talk will introduce the booklet developed by Wikimedia Chile, which provides step-by-step instructions for using Wikidata in the classroom, and includes several activities. By sharing this resource with educators and students, Wikimedia Chile hopes to promote the use of Wikidata as a valuable educational tool, and to encourage more people to contribute to this growing platform.
