Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

This session will be an introduction of Wikeys, the pedagogical game produced by Wikimédia France in 2022 to help educators teaching Wikipedia to students from 12 years and on. It will be an opportunity for our chapter to introduce its design to the movement, as well as propose the participants to play!

Description[edit source]

Writing and editing Wikipedia in class is a time-consuming activity, and explaining what is Wikipedia and its five main pillars can also be challenging. This is why we came up with the idea of a classroom game. It ended up becoming a print&play game named “Wikeys”. During this session, we will introduce its raison d’être, as well as its game play, and then, after explaining the rules of the game, play together! Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

First of all, Wikeys is meant to be as accessible as possible, allowing hence a Diversity of players. It is a pdf file which is free to download and easy to print, so that financial and Internet connection issues cannot be obstacles to play the game. It was also designed to be colorblind friendly, and accessible from 12 years old, unconsidering their knowledge of Wikipedia. So Wikeys targets a wide and diverse audience. Then, Collaboration is definitely a core of this board game : Wikeys aims to help people understand the collaborative process behind the writing of articles on Wikipedia, and more generally the functioning of wikimedia projects. Lastly, as Wikeys was designed for pupils from 12 years old, the theme of Future is absolutely taken into consideration as we are willing to attract possible future editors and Wikimedians, hence contributing to the sustainability of our movement.
