2023:Program/Education/PRGJCD-WikiLearn: a learning and training space for the Wikimedia movement
Title: WikiLearn: a learning and training space for the Wikimedia movement
Speakers:
Asaf Bartov (WMF)
I have been a practicing (volunteer) Wikipedian for many years; my home wiki is the Hebrew Wikipedia, but I am also active in Wikidata and the Wikimedia Commons, and I make occasional contributions on the English Wikipedia as well, all under my volunteer account. I have a strong background in software engineering, and an abiding interest in literature, education, open access, linked data, and library science. At the Foundation, I am working on increasing reach (readers) and participation (editors) in emerging communities, through community support as well as partnerships with grantees, other NGOs, and governments. My main project since 2019 is the WikiLearn online learning environment. Previously, I had worked on the Community Capacity Development program and as a grants program officer.

Abstract & description
[edit source]Abstract
[edit source]WikiLearn is a new Learning Management System implemented by the Wikimedia Foundation for the use of the entire Wikimedia movement. It can host MOOC-like recorded courses, live sessions, self-paced or instructor-led learning, with computer or human grading. It is based on the free software Open edX, enhanced with content translation features developed specifically for Wikimedia. I will present the features of the platform, which is ready for you to use.
Description
[edit source]The talk will present the various features of the WikiLearn platform, showcase some ready courses, and demonstrate the new course content translation feature.
Further details
[edit source]Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?
The WikiLearn platform is expected to be the pillar of our strategic priority of skill-building and leadership-development, and thus of the future of our volunteer communities.
Also, online learning promotes diversity in that it can reach people who cannot benefit from in-person training for whatever reason.
Finally, the course content translation feature promotes diversity, in that it breaks the mold of “produce in English, then translate to other languages”, enabling us to benefit from excellent learning materials created in any language.
Qn. What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
Everyone can participate in this session
