I am a manager in the Movement Communications team at the Wikimedia Foundation. I’ve had the pleasure of supporting the Wikimedia movement as staff since May 2019. I’m originally from Iran and live in Toronto, Canada. I have worked for more than 10 years in the non-profit sector. A pivotal part was based out of Bangkok where I worked across Asia and the Pacific with highly marginalized populations, youth leaders, and volunteer activists on the response to HIV. I have a masters degree in international development from the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po. I have worked on communication, education, social justice, advocacy, human rights, migration, and gender and sexual diversity with grassroots communities, international NGOs, and the UN. Before joining the Foundation, I was working with UNESCO in Kabul, Afghanistan on education reform and curriculum design with a focus on lifelong learning, 21st century skills, and digital literacy. Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

Wiki Karaoke night is a fun and interactive activity that allows participants to showcase their singing talents, enjoy music from different genres and cultures, and bond with other Wikimedians. Karaoke night is open to all conference attendees who want to join as singers or spectators.

Description[edit source]

The main objectives of karaoke night are:

♫ To provide a relaxing and entertaining break from the formal sessions of the conference ♫ To foster a sense of community and camaraderie among Wikimedians ♫ To celebrate the diversity and richness of musical expressions across Wikimedia projects ♫ To encourage creativity and collaboration among participants

Karaoke night will take place on the evening of the second day of the conference, after the dinner. The venue will be a spacious hall with a stage, a sound system, a projector, and a karaoke machine. The duration will be two hours.

The karaoke machine will have a selection of songs in different languages and genres, sourced from multiple sources. Participants can improvise as long as they respect the code of conduct.

Participants can sign up to sing solo or in groups, either in advance or on the spot. Each participant or group will have a maximum of five minutes to perform their song. The order of the performances will be determined by a random draw.

The audience will be encouraged to cheer and applaud for the performers, but also to respect their choices and preferences. There will be no judging or scoring of the performances, as the aim is to have fun and not to compete.
