Abstract

[edit source]

Offering advice on how to engage underrepresented groups to participate in wiki projects with ease and increase the scope of those projects exponentially according to the available resources.

Description

[edit source]

In this session we’re going to create a parallel between community health and the need for diversity projects. By sharing how communities can improve community health and provide better experience for the newcomers with various approaches, we can help with overall gaps in knowledge and therefore impact the knowledge equity as one of the strategic recommendations. Presentation will be structured in that way, so that we can see challenges, examples and lessons learned, with emphasis on the region with cultural and historical conflicts. The aim is to share concrete examples, but also to make some space for the participants to share their own experiences. The conclusions will be done based on experience within WMRS’ projects, cross-regional collaboration and a planned research project we’re hoping to implement in the near future.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

Our proposed session covers all event themes: Diversity: This session is focused on diversity with several goals. One of the goals is to have a better impact on community health by trying to share models that can be effective in other, similar communities. The lessons learned will be based on our work within diversity projects that are focused on both increasing the content about underrepresented groups, but also involving more editors and community members from those groups. We also have established partnerships with third parties from specific areas, but with similar goals as WMRS. Collaboration: Within this session we’re going to present how partnerships can affect better outcomes and provide Wikimedia affiliates with skills, knowledge and other resources. With such resources, the affiliates can expand their impact in this field. In our view, collaboration with other Wikimedia affiliates, but also with various stakeholders is the key for success. Future: In order to stay relevant and to invest in our future, we must primarily invest in our community. By discussing with Wikipedians and Wikimedians about this topic, we believe we can shape the future together, learn from each other and make sure that we’re nurturing a healthy, strong and diverse community.
