Abstract

[edit source]

This workshop will showcase the technicalities of how to digitize ancient manuscripts in various materials. It will use a real photography rig and real Indonesian ancient manuscript samples.

Description

[edit source]

Wikisource Loves Manuscripts (WiLMa) is a digitization project that aims to preserve endangered manuscript heritage around the globe. The pilot took place in Indonesia, particularly in Bali, Java, and Sumatra islands which have various manuscript cultures. This project invites anyone who is interested in preserving the manuscript digitally using Wikimedia platforms.

We will bring the vibes of fieldwork on manuscript digitization through a workshop session. Using specified photography tools and real Indonesian ancient manuscripts, the session will be interactive where participants can ask or try to digitize the manuscripts directly.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

The Wikisource Loves Manuscripts project will be the pilot of manuscript digitization to preserve diversity in the manuscript culture. The project needs the participation of local experts in Bali, Java, and Sumatra, that’s why we strongly engaged with our colleagues in the mentioned regions to collaborate in locating the endangered manuscript collections and to preserve them through digitization.

The post-production of the fieldwork is also a collaborative work, where the manuscripts are transcribed via Wikisource by communities in the regions. Wikimedian, students, teachers, and other people are also involved in transcribing the manuscripts.

Since this project is being prepared for wider regions, we are looking forward to making collaboration with any possible partners.
