Abstract[edit source]

Wiki Loves Living Heritage invites Wikimedians, intangible cultural heritage authorities and organizations and heritage practitioners come together to showcase and develop activities in the Wiki Loves Living Heritage campaign. It is a wiki initiative to pay tribute to the 20 years of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Description[edit source]

Living heritage is celebrated throughout the world in 2023, marking the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Wiki Loves Living Heritage is a wiki initiative that pays tribute to the anniversary and invites heritage communities, Wikimedia volunteers, safeguarding organizations and authorities around the world to document and share Living Heritage together.

Living Heritage, or intangible cultural heritage, stands for practices, knowledge and skills that have been passed on through generations and are still valuable and in use today. It includes for example oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe or the knowledge and skills related to crafts.

Wiki Loves Living Heritage wishes to bring the communities together to share and to learn each other’s skills and practices. Sharing information openly on Wikimedia platforms can help in safeguarding living heritage practices. At the same time it is important to adopt ethical considerations in online sharing to protect living heritage from exploitation. Many kinds of activities can take place under the Wiki Loves Loves Living Heritage umbrella from data and media imports to photo walks or seminars.

The focus is not only on tradition, but the way in which people bridge between the past and the future.
