2023:Program/Governance/J3CBLP-Designing equitable decision-making in the Wikimedia Movement
Title: Designing equitable decision-making in the Wikimedia Movement
Director Governance & Movement Relations at Wikimedia Deutschland. I joined Wikimedia Deutschland in 2010 and have been working on projects like the Chapters Dialogue and the annual Wikimedia Summit. In 2018-20, I have led the Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy where hundreds of Wikimedians from across the world created recommendations and principles for the future of the Wikimedia Movement.
I’m chair of Wikimedia Deutschland’s supervisory Board and a governance nerd. I love structures, processes and models if they help us to organize our work better. I started to edit Wikipedia 2004 and I served on the WMF Board of Trustees from 2012 to 2018.
I’m a member of Wikimedia Deutschland’s (WMDE) Supervisory Board. Wikimania Singapore is my first! I’m excited to engage with volunteers from all over the world and contribute to the shaping of the Wikimedia Movement.

Abstract & description[edit source]
An interactive workshop where participants will map out which decisions should be made by whom in the Wikimedia movement to assure the principles of subsidiarity and equity in decision making. Participants will discuss scenarios including their risks and benefits. The insights will be shared with the movement, including the MCDC. Speakers: Alice Wiegand and Nora Circosta (WMDE, Supervisory Board), Nicole Ebber (WMDE, Director Movement Strategy and Global Relations)
In this interactive workshop, participants will map out which decisions should be made by whom in the Wikimedia movement to assure the principles of subsidiarity and equity in decision making. Participants will be asked to share their wishes and ideas, but also to talk about their concerns. They will get an opportunity to reflect with other Wikimedians about their views on what’s at stake in the global governance reform, and get a better understanding of overlaps as well as contradictory ideas.
Starting from the current situation, participants from across the movement (communities, affiliates, WMF, hubs, etc) are invited to map out and discuss scenarios, and identify their risks and benefits.
The expected outcome of this workshop is a contribution to the global conversation around equitable governance. It will bring the abstract topic of governance and decision making closer to the day-to-day lives of the participants.
