HakanIST

I am a member of the Wikimedia community and have contributed to various Wikimedia projects over the years. As a steward for Wikimedia projects and a member of the board election committee, I had the opportunity to participate in important decision-making processes and provide valuable input. I am also a founding member of the Wikimedia Turkic Languages User Group and Wikimedia Turkey User Group, where I have worked collaboratively to promote the representation of Turkic cultural heritage on Wikimedia platforms. I have been involved in the Strategy Process of Wikimedia Foundation, which has given me insights into the future direction of Wikimedia.

Abstract

[edit source]

This lightning talk is to share the experiences of collaboration among Turkic-speaking countries on Wikimedia projects, highlighting the challenges and successes. It proposes the implementation of a hub that would facilitate communication, resource-sharing, and coordination among these countries, ultimately improving the quality and quantity of content on Wikimedia platforms in Turkic languages.

Description

[edit source]

The Turkic-speaking countries share a rich cultural heritage and a common linguistic background. Wikimedia projects offer a platform for the preservation and dissemination of this heritage in the digital age. However, the participation of these countries on Wikimedia projects is currently limited, and there is a need for better collaboration and capacity building to improve the quality and quantity of content.

This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of collaboration among Turkic-speaking countries on Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. It will also highlight the challenges and opportunities in developing content in Turkic languages.

One of the main challenges faced by contributors from these countries is the lack of technical skills and knowledge needed to create and edit content on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. This has resulted in a lack of representation of Turkic cultural heritage on these platforms. To address this issue, the presentation will emphasize the importance of capacity building, providing training and resources to improve the skills of contributors.

The proposed implementation of a hub for collaboration among Turkic-speaking countries on Wikimedia projects will be a key focus of the presentation. The hub will facilitate communication and resource-sharing, allowing contributors to work together and share their expertise. The hub will also provide access to training and resources to build the capacity of contributors, with a focus on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.

The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the potential impact of the proposed hub on the quality and quantity of content on Wikimedia projects in Turkic languages. It will highlight the benefits of improved collaboration and capacity building, including the preservation and dissemination of Turkic cultural heritage, the promotion of multilingualism, and the fostering of a sense of community among contributors from Turkic-speaking countries.

In summary, this presentation will emphasize the importance of collaboration and capacity building in improving the representation of Turkic cultural heritage on Wikimedia projects, with a focus on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. The proposed implementation of a hub will be a key strategy in achieving these goals.
