Abstract & description[edit source]
Abstract[edit source]
This workshop will discuss best practices for how volunteers can handle legal threats. This is particularly relevant for functionaries, members of affiliates, and VRT members.
Description[edit source]
This workshop will discuss best practices for how volunteers can handle legal threats, including when to loop in the Foundation’s legal team via legal@wikimedia.org - and, conversely, how the wider Movement can help the Foundation’s legal team on the complaints it receives directly. This workshop is particularly relevant to:
- Current or potential Volunteer Response Team (VRT) agents. This will include a review and discussion of this rather old piece of advice for VRT agents on VRT Wiki, including possible updates: https://vrt-wiki.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:What_do_I_send_to_the_legal_team%3F.
- Affiliates, who may receive legal threats. This could include a collaborative workshop between the Foundation’s litigation team, Wikimedia Espana (subject to confirmation) and 1 or 2 more chapters, to share their own cautionary tales and learn from other chapters on how to better deal with project-related litigation, and how to avoid getting caught up in it in the first place.
- Functionaries, and any volunteer working in contentious areas, particularly BLP articles, media (e.g. photos) of identifiable people on Commons, and BLP Wikidata items.
There will also be some case studies of successful or less successful legal dispute resolution. One pain point is currently BLP content on Wikidata, for example, not having a real home for complaints in VRT.
