Abstract & description
[edit source]Abstract
[edit source]Learn about the open data project OpenStreetMap, how it relates to various Wikimedia projects, how to contribute to it, and how to link it with Wikidata.
Description
[edit source]OpenStreetMap (OSM) is possibly the largest collaborative open data project that contain structured data for real-world places and things. OSM is oftened described as the “Wikipedia for maps” and Wikimedians are using OSM, including in the interactive maps that dot our pages and in static map images that are uploaded to Commons.
In this workshop, we will be giving a short introduction to OSM, and teach participants how to contribute and map in OSM using readily available tools. In the last part of the workshop, we will be teaching participants how to link OSM and Wikidata together and how this linking powers a lot of the OSM–Wikimedia interactions that currently exist.
Further details
[edit source]Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?
Our workshop is mainly related to the Collaboration theme because Wikimedia projects are not islands to themselves and we should be working with other open knowledge and open data projects that exist such as the Internet Archive and OpenStreetMap.
Qn. What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
Average knowledge about Wikimedia projects or activities
Qn. What is the most appropriate format for this session?
- Onsite in Singapore
- Remote online participation, livestreamed
- Remote from a satellite event
- Hybrid with some participants in Singapore and others dialing in remotely
- Pre-recorded and available on demand
